Biography: Elijah Cherry IV was born on June 28, 1961 to the late Elijah Cherry III and Mary Lee High-Cherry in Windsor, North Carolina. He later converted to Islam and changed his name to Elijah Shabazz. Many of his friends knew him as Moogie Moog but to his family and close friends he was affectionately known as "Butchie" On the basketball court he was known as “Black Mercedes” or “Butchie Rockwell”. Elijah departed this life suddenly on January, 15, 2021.
Elijah was raised in the Bronx, NY and remained there until his passing. In his early years Elijah attended the NYC Public School System and later graduated from Evander Childs HS in the Bronx. Elijah went on to graduate with an Associate’s Degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College and Bachelor’s Degree from City College.
Elijah had an ardent love of basketball. He played on the basketball teams at Evander Childs HS, Borough of Manhattan Community College and at the Pro Rucker games. Elijah was “nice” and could handle a basketball. He was a defensive specialist and a great shooter. Everyone loved to see him shake and bake on the court. Elijah began teaching for the New York City Department of Education. He loved working with children and he loved to show off his basketball skills. He enjoyed coaching and was a father figure to a lot of his students. When the school did not pay for uniforms, Elijah used his own money to ensure that the kids had what they needed. Elijah retired from the Department of Education in 2018 after completing 25 years of service.
Elijah met and married the love of his life Marcia Shabazz on January 15, 1993. Together with His “Queen” as he affectionately called her they produced 3 boys. Elijah Shabazz, Jamal Shabazz and Malik Shabazz. Elijah also had one daughter Kalyla Bennet of Beauford, Georgia who he loved dearly as well. Elijah was a family man that believed in taking care of his family. He believed in the teachings of Allah and was a provider and protector to his family. He also maintained a close relationship with his brothers and sisters.
Elijah loved to shop and he was always fly. All of his outfits matched to a ‘T”. But he was best known for his suits and bowties. He had a personality that would light a room, along with his infectious smile. He will forever be missed.
Elijah was proceeded in death by his parents Elijah and Mary Lee Cherry, his siblings James Cherry and Robin Cherry and his mother in law Jean Jackson.
Elijah leaves to mourn His Queen Marcia Shabazz, 3 sons, Elijah Shabazz, Jamal Shabazz, Malik Shabazz, 1 daughter Kayla Bennet, 5 Siblings Tony Cherry (Jacqueline), Carshenia Cherry, Jeffrey Cherry, Raleigh Berry of Windsor, NC and Lois Vaughan(Terry) of Powellsville, NC, 1 Brother-in law Jonathan Staten, 3 Sisters-in-law Keisha Graham (Kevin), Joanna Sullivan (Kenny), Jacqueline McCutchen, 2 Aunts: Katherine Wesson of Waldord MD, Angeline Cooper of Norfolk, 1 Great Aunt Minnie Allen of Windsor NC, 1 Great Uncle Samuel Cherry, Bx, NY and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
