Mazie Epps Hughes was born in Disputanta, Virginia on April 2nd 1920. To the late Mary Taylor Epps and Percy Epps. The older of their two children.
Mazie attended and graduated elementary through high school in Richmond Virginia. Upon finishing School and getting her mother’s blessing she left the farm life behind and made the trip to New York City.
Mazie married and divorced Lorenzo Hughes in the 1940’s they had no children. She was swept off her feet by a big band singer Freddie Watson, with whom she had her only child, a son Ronald Watson predeceased.
Mazie had many jobs in house cleaning for wealthy individuals and stars. Worked on a train, even in a mental hospital in upstate NY. Until she got a job and a union membership for the United States Postal Service. Where her career would span 18 years before retirement.
Mazie enjoyed her retirement. Frequently going on trips. From Cruise ships and sandy beaches of the many islands of the Caribbean. To Canada, Maine, Las Vegas, Chicago, New Orleans, and Atlantic City. Having a great time with friends, knitting dresses for dolls, sweaters, scarfs, hats. Her greatest pastime is imparting her wisdom to her grandchildren. And rooting for her favorite baseball team the NY Mets.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories with her grandchildren. Shawnea Walker at home, grand daughters; Tawana Rushing, Keyonna Harvin, and Neewana Keys. Grand sons; Tronald Whitaker, Lamont Macon, Ronald Watson Jr predeceased. Her 1st Cousin Alfreda Patterson, a host of cousins, great grands and great great-grands. And many friends that made their transition before her.
